Design for Durability - Specifications

The following is a check list of some items which should be included in the specifications, considered at the design stage, or indicated on drawings:

  • Hazard level
  • Natural durability
  • Combination natural durability and preservative treatment
  • Grade i.e. special requirements (e.g. decking)
  • Moisture content
  • Ventilation
  • Insect protection-chemical and/or mechanical (termites/marine borers)
  • Sarking, flashing, vapour barriers/DPC's
  • Joint detailing - shrinkage restraint and moisture traps
  • Workmanship
  • Finishing
  • Maintenance
