Preservative Treatment RequirementsResearch and in-service trials have shown that different standards of preservative treatment are required to prevent degrade in various hazard conditions. When deciding upon the level of preservative treatment, hazard levels should be specified in accordance with AS 1604. AS 1604 also interrelates chemical retention levels (these vary with species, durability class, chemical and hazard level), natural durability ratings, preservative chemical penetration patterns and hazard levels. In New South Wales and Queensland, the "Timber Marketing Act" and "Timber Utilisation and Marketing Act" respectively, regulate the sale, use and processes of preservative treatments. These Acts also specify required retention levels, durability ratings, quality control procedures, branding, etc. Such legislation overrides the Australian Standard, but is closely aligned to it.
