Nailplate Joined Structural Timber - Introduction and Product Types

Larger size and longer length timber products can be produced from short lengths of smaller sized timber by edge-jointing and butt-jointing using nailplates.

The development of nailplate joined products provides greater utilisation of small section sizes and satisfies the demand for larger size structural timbers. In general, the manufacture of nailplate joined products is a relatively simple process, although it requires heavy duty machinery and so cannot be carried out on-site.

There are several types of nailplated joined products available. Figure 1 illustrates the three most common types.

  • Horizontally joined components consisting of sections joined edge to edge.
  • Butt-jointed, fabricated by joining sections end to end to produce long lengths.
  • Composite members made up of a combination of the above two types.
