Design for Durability - Isolation

Timber must be physically isolated from concrete or masonry as they can act as sources of moisture. Timber can be isolated by:

  • Fastening the timber to the masonry or concrete by means of a metal bracket
  • Providing a ventilated air space between timber and the moisture sources
  • Installing a damp proof course (DPC) between the timber and masonry or concrete
  • A combination of these systems.

Figure 1 illustrates several means by which timber may be isolated from potential moisture sources including concrete or masonry.
