Design for Durability - Moisture Traps and Contact Areas

Moisture traps should be avoided, particularly where connections and joints are exposed to the weather. Figures 1 and 2 illustrate some suitable details.

In exposed situations, horizontal contact areas between members should be kept to a minimum and all joints should be free draining where possible. They should also allow natural ventilation of as many surfaces as possible. If necessary, drainage holes should be included in the joint detail. Avoid enclosing timber in sockets or "shoes" if used externally and exposed to the weather.
