Plywood Webbed Beams - Product Types and Applications

Plywood webbed beams can be manufactured in three basic profiles: -

  • Box-Beams. Box-beams are the most common webbed beams in use. They have high strength and stability, light weight and simple fabrication requirements. A typical box-beam is shown in Figure 1. Box-beams are readily used in domestic, industrial, agricultural and commercial applications. Their structural form may be as a simple beam, special shape beams (e.g. tapered or curved top flange) or as complete portal frame elements.
  • "C"-Beams (Channel Beams). Plywood webbed beams in a "C" section profile are not as common as box-beams. They are used as lintels in domestic applications and as roofing purlins in industrial and agricultural structures. Spans of up to 10 m have been achieved with "C" section roof purlins using simple on-site nailed fabrication.
  • "I"-Beams. Plywood webbed "I" beams rely on a high strength glued connection between the web and flanges This necessitates factory controlled finger jointing, glue mixing and curing techniques. The span capabilities of "I" beams range up to approximately 20m. A typical "I" beam is shown in Figure 2.
