Overlay strip flooring - design and installation criteria

Overlay strip flooring can be laid in a number of contexts, including;

  1. Directly fixed to an existing concrete floor;
  2. Fixed to timber battens over an existing concrete floor;
  3. Fixed directly over an existing timber floor;
  4. As strip flooring, fixed on battens over an existing timber floor;
  5. As a metal clipped overlay strip floor bedded on a rubberised blanket over the substrate flooring; and
  6. As a floating floor over concrete or other substrates.

The following criteria are important when installing overlay strip flooring:

  • The timber should have a moisture content matching that of the long term service environment;
  • The work in general should be free of entrapped pockets or sources of moisture;
  • Substrates should be dry and have a stable moisture content. For concrete slab substrates, a drying time of one calendar month per 25 mm thickness of slab is recommended;
  • Substrate surfaces should be flat and level;
  • The surrounding environment should be stable. Heating or air-conditioning systems should be established and operational;
  • Approved adhesives should be used in accordance with the manufacturers’ recommendations.
