Abstract
The structural efficiency of plywood webbed box beams is well known, particularly for large span structures. When manufactured using nailing, the absence of the need for special skills and equipment makes these elements cost effective in most economies, and in particular in developing economies. When used for portal frames, the spanning potential is at least 50 metres, with an innovative knee joint detail as described in the paper.
