The Culture of Using Timber as a Building Material in Australia

Abstract

Timber is an important building material in Australia and the quality of its use relates directly to how design professionals, architects and engineers, understand and frame their view of the material. Many find timber construction attractive but cannot clearly explain why. Others believe it is a material to be avoided due to its perceived unreliability. This paper explores both these positions, examining what evidence there is for each and accessing the impact of both views on the quality of timber design in Australia.
