Materials Basics

This presentation and guide set provides an introduction to timber used in internal applications and a detailed overview of timber's material properties. It includes two presentations: an application overview, and a technical description of the material.

Timber is one of the oldest building materials known.  It has been used in buildings in most parts of the world for thousands of years. Along with masonry, it provided the mainstay of building construction around the world until the 1800s.

Timber is a natural, renewable material that is both beautiful and durable. As such, it is specified for a broad range of applications in Australian design.

This presentation and guide set includes:

+ wood and its origins

+ moisture in timber

+ grain, strength and stiffness

+ timber products

+ timber grades and grading.

Other presentation and guides sets in this group are:

  • IA-2: Visual Basics

  • IA-3: Flooring

  • IA-4: Internal lining

  • IA-5: Furniture and Joinery

  • IA-6: Windows, Doors and Stairs

  • IA-7: Architectural Structures.
