ESD imperatives and buildings

This presentation and guide set establishes the context for ESD (ecologically sustainable development) against the impact that Australians and Australian builidng  in particular has on the environment.

Australians relish a high energy and high consumption lifestyle. This generates a wide range of environmental impacts, both local and global. Global impacts are significant, especially given Australia’s relatively small population. As Australia’s demand for more resource-intensive lifestyles has increased, environmental impacts have also increased.

The presentation and guide covers:

+ Introduction to environmental impacts

+ ESD – concepts and definitions

+ ESD, buildings and building materials

+ ESD in building development

Timber in sustainable building design
This presentation and guide set explores how timber can improve sustainable building design by providing greater design flexibility with a low embodied energy material.
Timber as a sustainable building material
This presentation and guide set examines the environmental impacts of making timber and timber products and compare them with the impacts of other major building materials such as steel and concrete.
ESD, Forests and Forestry
This presentation and guide set provides an overview of forests as an ESD resource and describes the general mechanisms for forest management in Australia and forest certification internationally.
