Effect of connections on sound transmission through walls
Sound incident upon plasterboard lining causes it to vibrate. This creates bending waves within the lining. These bending waves can pass through timber studs and more plasterboard to radiate sound into an adjacent room.

Impact Sound Transmission through Walls
Impact sounds are produced when cupboard doors are shut, plumbing used or objects dropped.

Sound Transmission Class (STC) and Sound Insulation
The intensity of sound entering a space will depend upon the intensity of the outside sound and on the sound performance of walls, floors, ceilings, doors and windows. The sound performance of any element is given by the STC rating.

Timber Sound Control Walls
It is possible for timber framed walls to match, and in many cases outperform the sound performance of much heavier masonry construction.

Transmission of sound through doors and windows
The presence of doors and windows can have a significant effect on the STC rating of a wall.
